Hearing the word New York," what do you associate it with?
Arrays of skyscrapers, Broadway, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, Fifth Avenue, the Empire State Building, Wall Street, streets where youngsters gather, Harlem, wealth and poverty, hope and despair, success and frustration.
Everyone has his/her own image of New York, whether or not he/she has actually been there. Every one of these images may fit a certain aspect of New York. This is a complex city which no single image can be identified. Yet it is a city which attracts people.
The JETRO New York Center occupies the entire 44th floor of the McGraw-Hill Building, which is situated in the Rockefeller Center complex, one of the best known sightseeing spots in Manhattan. The office is staffed with about 90 people, including 40 from Japan.
In the United States, JETRO has offices in San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston, Atlanta and Denver, in addition to New York. The New York Center, JETRO's biggest overseas office, is in the center of JETRO operations in the Americas.
With an eye to harmonious development of trade between Japan and other countries, JETRO is engaged in diverse activities including the collection and supply of trade information, promotion of export and import business, and facilitation of industrial cooperation.
Established in 1968, the Ship Machinery Department of the JETRO New York Center handles ship machinery matters not only in the United States but throughout the Americas as well. Although its main responsibility is to collect and supply general information related to the ship machinery industry between Japan and the United States, it also provides assistance in the form of detailed information on particular products or research on particular subjects.
Dedicated to offering quality service, the Ship Machinery Department also receives fact-finding missions from Japan, gives advice, and makes arrangements for visitors to Japan. It also organizes seminars for the promotion of export and import trade. At present, the responsibilities of the Ship Machinery Department are fulfilled by Mr. Toshio Kotake, Director and Ms. Manami Ueno-Vetrano, Research Officer. Their office door is always open to interested visitors, and they are more than happy to respond any requests.
